Description: Baltimore has a rich maritime history. I live on the Chesapeake Bay and can imagine ships like this one from the City Springs Quilt sailing by as they made their way into Baltimore Harbor, just as I can see large container and cruise ships passing by today. The background is reminiscent of knots used by seamen. The border is quilted to resemble rope, as well. The block includes many batik fabrics which were not available to the first Baltimore Album quilt makers; but, since they used the most up-to-date fabrics available to them, I am sure that they would approve. The floral swag beneath the ship is the logo of the Baltimore Appliqué Society for which this little Bit of Baltimore was made. The block in the quilt was designed and adapted by BAS from antique quilts in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society for the City Springs Commemorative Quilt.
